Rhinoplasty

Because the average male nose is wider and larger than the average female nose, Rhinoplasty, or a “nose job” is often included in the list of recommended Facial Feminization procedures.

Rhinoplasty can reduce or increase the size of your nose, change the shape of the tip or the bridge, narrow the span of the nostrils, or change the angle between your nose and your upper lip. Rhinoplasty can also correct a deviated septum or other defects that cause breathing problems.

The Incisions:

In many cases, the incisions are made via what’s referred to as a “closed rhinoplasty.”  This means that the incisions are made on the inside of the nose with access via the nostrils.  However, there are some cases where an “open rhinoplasty” is preferred in order to provide greater surgical access.  In these cases, an incision is discreetly placed on the strip of skin which separates the two nostrils

After FFS Rhinoplasty:

After your rhinoplasty has been completed, two breathing straws are usually inserted and surrounded by tight packing.  A hard cast is also placed on the nose.  The breathing straws will provide some ability to breathe via the nose while the packing remains in place.  After five days, the straws, packing, and cast are all removed.  A hard strip of plastic is then put in place in order to provide support and protection while the nose continues to heal.  It is recommended that patients keep this strip in place until three weeks have passed.

Results:

Patients who are considering FFS Rhinoplasty must be aware that the final results won’t be immediate.  In fact, some residual inflammation is possible for up to one year after the surgery.  This is most often associated with the tip of the nose.  However, the most significant swelling should be gone after 4-6 weeks have passed.

How Long Will It Take To Recover From Facial Gender Confirmation Surgery?

Typically you will stay the night in hospital immediately after your surgery. Your surgeon will visit with you in the morning on the day after your surgery to check in with you.

The first few days you will experience facial swelling and also feel mild discomfort. However, because we will have taken steps to reduce your pain and swelling before you were operated on, this will subside rapidly.

Within about 7 days after your surgery, most of the swelling and bruising will resolve.

After about 3 to 4 weeks you should have a full recovery and be able to resume your usual activities and wear makeup. However, your results will continue to improve over the next few months, with the final result being evident at six to twelve months.
